Tips On How To Replace Your Lawn Like An Expert

Sodding and Sod Installation

If it’s time to replace your old lawn with fresh sodding, but you don’t want to shell out the cash for professional sod installation, then this is the guide for you!

Step 1: Measure the Area

Grass sod and grass seeds come in pre-measured amounts, so it’s good to have a measurement of how much of your lawn you’ll be replacing.

Step 2: Plan for Sod Disposal

It can be challenging to dispose of sodding properly. You can order a bin from a local disposal company, but it can be hard to find one that caters to sod removal.

Step 3: Pick Up Fresh Soil

You will want to go to a garden center or a local big box store that sells bags of soil of numerous sizes and compositions.

Step 4: Plan Sod Removal

Once you have the area figured out, you need to determine how you will be removing the old sod. If it is an area over 200 square feet, we would recommend renting a sod cutter.

Step 5: Configure Your Sod Cutters

Make sure you have your depth setting right and not run it in “sod-cutting mode” on your driveway or walkway because you could damage the unit’s cutting blade or your driveway/walkway.

Step 6: Pick Up Old Sod

Once you have the sod all cut or what we call “ripped,” you then begin to lift all the old sod from the dirt and put it in the rented disposal bin.

Step 7: Spread the New Soil

Now take the soil that you purchased and begin to spread it out over the original dirt, making sure you have enough before moving on to the next step.

Step 8: Rake the Area

Take a rake and begin to smooth out and level the area. This process may take a bit of time to get it all sloped and levelled according to city/town laws.

Step 9: Smooth Out the Soil

Use a roller to make sure the planting area is all level and not bumpy. After this step is done, you will probably have to use a bit more soil to fill in the dips and make sure the area is sloped correctly.

Step 10: Purchase New Sod

Now you need to purchase the sodding for your newly graded area. A roll of sodding needs to be laid down within 12 hours of when the company cut it.

Step 11: Lay Down the New Sod

When you lay the sodding, you need to stagger your joints—it is just like laying hardwood. Then give it a gentle watering before rolling it again to get any air pockets out that may be trapped.

Step 12: New Lawn Maintenance

Sit back and enjoy the new lawn that you did all by yourself. You will have to water multiple times a day and cut the grass within seven days of laying it.
